  1. Glimpse of a Polluted Future (by Kelly Roper)

Where are the birds that used to dot the sky?

They're not here anymore, and I have to wonder why.

Where are the fish that used to swim in this stream?

I can't see them anymore. What does that mean?

Where are the frogs that used to croak around this lake?

I can't hear them anymore. There must be some mistake.

I wish there was a clock whose hands I could rewind.

We might have saved these creatures if we'd just had more time.

Time to make people see how we're damaging our Earth,

Time to realize what it all was truly worth.

But the animals are disappearing at an alarming rate.

If we finally don't band together, it may really be too late

  1. The Stream Where I Played (by Kelly Roper)

I played in this stream as a child

When the ravine seemed so endless and wild.

The water was clear and smelled so clean,

It was so long ago that it seems like a dream.

Now this stream is too dirty for my child.

The water is scummy and smells vile.

The place where I played seems so foul and decayed,

And I shed the first tear as the dream starts to fade.

  1. We want nature to deceive (by Mark Lviv)

We want to cheat nature,

By itself it harder to bend,

But she will not forgive this,

And full of daring revenge!

We beat on it blow for blow,

And burn the forest, in the forest fire

Polluting rivers, lёm oil,

And the war with nature here and there.

She is sick and silent,

We just do not hear the screams,

Ulcers on the body grows,

For a living fascinated!

  1. Warned (by Sylvia Stults)

The sands of time have rendered fear

Blue skies on high no longer clear

Stars were bright whence they came

Now dimmed, obscured, pollution's haze

Crystal clear our waters gleamed

Fish abundant, rivers streamed

Ocean floors sandy white

Now littered, brown, pollution's plight

Trees towered high above

Trunks baring professed love

Birds chirping from sites unseen

Gone, paper joined pollution's team

One can't blame pollution alone

As they say, you reap what you've sown

So let us plant a better seed

Tear out old roots, cultivate, weed

Protect what has been given for free

Our waters, skies, wildlife and trees

For once they're gone, don't you say

Consider yourself warned of that fatal day

  1. I am the Earth

I am the Earth And the Earth is me.

Each blade of grass Each honey tree

Each bit of mud And stick and stone

Is blood and muscle Skin and bone.

And just as I Need every bit

Of me to make My body fit

So Earth needs Grass and stone and tree

And things that grow here Naturally

  1. "Kyshtym accident"

"Kyshtym accident" - a very serious man-made radiation accident at the chemical plant "Mayak", located in the closed city, "Chelyabinsk-40" (since 1990-ies - Ozersk).

Crash got its name Kyshtym for the reason that of Ozersk were classified and were absent on the maps until 1990, and Kyshtym, the nearest to him the city. 29 September 1957 because of a failure of the cooling system there was an explosion of tanks with capacity 300 cubic meters, which contained about 80 m3 of highly radioactive nuclear waste.

The blast, estimated at tens of tons in a trotyl equivalent, capacity was destroyed, a concrete slab thickness of 1 meter, weighing 160 tonnes discarded, the atmosphere was thrown about 20 million curies of radiation. Some radioactive materials was raised by the explosion to a height of 1-2 km and formed a cloud consisting of liquid and solid aerosols.

During the 10-11 hours of the radioactive substances fell over 300-350 km in a North-easterly direction from the explosion site (downwind). More than 23 thousand square kilometers were in the contaminated area. In this area there were 217 settlements with more than 280 thousands residents, closest to the epicenter of the disaster, there were several plants of the plant "Mayak", a military camp and colony inmates.

For liquidation of consequences of the accident involved hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians who have received substantial doses of radiation. The territory that underwent radioactive pollution as a result of the explosion at the chemical plant, was named “East-Ural radioactive trace”. The total length was about 300 km, with a width of 5-10 km.

  1. The release of oil from the tanker "Prestige"

"Prestige" - single-hull tankers flying the Bahamian flag. As a result of his accident was the largest maritime environmental disaster off the coast of Europe.

November 13, 2002 the tanker was in a heavy storm off the coast of Galicia. As a result, a crack 35 meters long ship, oil tanker and began to give the leakage of oil - about 1000 tons per day. Attempts were made to save the "Prestige", but the Spanish authorities have banned the shore to go to the nearest ports, Portugal did not allow the entrance of faulty tanker in its waters. And emergency boat, it was decided to tow in the sea.

November 19, 2002 "Prestige" was split in two and sank in 210 kilometers from Galicia. In the sea spilled over 20 million gallons of oil that caused irreparable damage to the entire marine and coastal fauna and fishing industry.

  1. Explosion petroleum platform Deepwater Horizon

Explosion petroleum platform Deepwater Horizon — crash (explosion and fire), which took place April 20, 2010 year in 80 kilometers from coast state Louisiana in Mexican bay on petroleum platform Deepwater Horizon on Makondo.

After the explosion on the platform fire started, which tried snuff out with fire ships, column of smoke up the height 3 kilometers. Fire lasted 36 hours and April 22, 2010 year oil platform Deepwater Horizon sank.

This explosion It has become the largest in USA history and largnest technogenic catastrophe on the negative impact on ecological situation.

In the moment explosion on Deepwater Horizon killed 11 people and 17 suffered of 126 people on board.

For 152 days in Mexican bay spilled about 5 millions barrels of petroleum, oil spot it was area 75 thousand square kilometers.

  1. Great smog

Great smog— the serious air pollution which happened in London in December, 1952. During the anti-cyclone which brought cold and windless weather, pollutants — generally coal — gathered over the city, having formed a thick layer of a smog. It proceeded since Friday 5 till Tuesday December 9, 1952 then weather was replaced, and fog dispersed.

Though could  and worsened visibility and besides got into rooms, reaction of citizens was quiet as in London fogs not a rarity. In the next weeks, however, the statistical data collected by health services of the city revealed killing nature of disaster — quantity of death among babies, aged and having respiratory diseases by December 8 reached four thousand people; more than 100 thousand people got sick. Later researches showed that total number of the dead was much more, about 12 000 people.

The great smog is considered the worst event connected with the air pollution which happened in Great Britain, and the most important from the point of view of influence on ecological researches, government actions and public informing on interrelation between purity of air and human health . It led to some changes in the legislation, including adoption in 1956 of the Clean Air Act.

  1. The collapse of the American tanker "Amoco Cadiz"

The collapse of the American tanker "Amoco Cadiz" described in the book of Guinness World Records as "The largest oil tanker accident." The tanker ran aground and split in two 96 miles off the coast of Brittany. As a result, the water poured out of 220,000 tons. Oil. Spot extended to 2000 square kilometers.

The immediate cause of death of the tanker was a strong storm, but it contributed to the criminal negligence of the captain to the technical condition of the ship and the greed of the rescue team.

"Amoco Cadiz", sailing under the Liberian flag, but owned by "American International Oil Company", with full tanks of oil came from the Persian Gulf to Rotterdam. The captain of the tanker was aware of the failure of one of the winch anchors, but nevertheless he decided to go to sea. On the eve of the tragedy at the entrance to the English Channel on the ship there was a serious accident vehicles, and it has lost control. We had to ask for help. The nearest suitable rescue vessel - West German tug "Pacific" - was very close, in the French port of Brest. Leave it immediately to the aid of a fixed "Amoco Cadiz", the catastrophe would have been averted. But the captain, "Pacifica," at first decided to contact by radio with his boss - a rescue company from which wanted to get permission and instructions. When the answer came from Hamburg, in the English Channel has been raging storm, and the tanker began the demolition of the shore. The only anchor did not hold.

Using stalemate tanker and following instructions received, the captain of "Pacifica" before the towing required for saving a hefty sum. Within three hours in a stormy sea was bargaining between the captains rescued and rescue vessels, and in the meantime the tanker closer and closer to the shore of the tray. Finally, the parties came to an agreement and "Pacific" had been promised two million dollars, tug dragged "Amoco Cadiz" to the open sea, but in the fourth minute burst towline. In order to create a new environment in a ten-storm, it took another three hours, but the cable was not sustained.

The enormity of the situation in the fully opened, when it became known that the company offered a rescue tugboat captain sent to the disaster area is another, more powerful ship, but he decided to deal with alone, not wanting anyone to share premium. Now, the tanker was doomed. At nightfall, he sat down on the rocks, the underwater part of the sample, the water flooded the engine room, the crew on the SOS signal was removed by helicopter. By morning, the body broke, the oil poured into the sea.

  1. Minamata disease in Ontario

Canadian environmental disaster of 1970, also known as the Minamata disease in Ontario is a neurological syndrome caused by acute mercury poisoning.

It happened in Kanatsouli Ontario in 1970, especially affecting the two communities of Indians located in northwestern Ontario, due to the consumption of fish contaminated with mercury, and one community in southern Ontario due to illegal release of industrial chemical waste. The disease was named Minamata, because the symptoms were identical to previous cases of mercury poisoning occurred in Minamata city, Japan.

The source of the mercury was electrochemical production of chlorine at the Dryden Chemical Company.

  1. Accident in Gulf of Mexico

On April, 20th, 2010 in Gulf of Mexico there was one of the most serious ecological tragedies for all history of the given region. As a result of explosion on an oil platform of company BP — 11 persons were lost, still it is known about 17 victims. Consequences make till now destructive impact on fauna. After accident in which result to water has got about 5000000 barrels of oil, has strongly increased death rate among 14 kinds of the animals extended around a gulf.

Oil anywhere was gone, it is at the bottom of a gulf, it washes away on coast and brings water in a bog. Under some data since April, 2010 it was revealed dolphins 900 dead or cast ashore. Dolphins who live in the areas of a gulf polluted by oil, suffer from numerous diseases of a liver and lungs, differ slackness and in small weight of a body. After failure around Gulf of Mexico every year found about 500 dead turtles.

Besides scientists have revealed the raised maintenance of toxic substances in blood at birds who winter at coast near to a gulf, and in blood at the cachalots who are often swimming away to that place where there was a failure, the abnormal high maintenance of chrome and nickel — the metals having destructive influence on cages is fixed. And the reason for all for it there was an explosion.

  1. The disaster in the Indian city of Bhopal

The disaster in the Indian city of Bhopal - one of the largest in the number of casualties. 18 thousand people were killed due to leakage of chemicals December 3, 1984 at the factory Union Carbide, 3000 of whom were killed in the accident day. 60 thousand liters widely used at the time of the chemical insecticide Sevin, was stored at the plant in barrels, partly dug into the ground.

Due to the failure of the cooling system there was a release of one of the derivatives of the chemical. 42 tons of methyl isocyanine fumes of toxic compounds have led to numerous casualties in the surrounding slums, as well as on the territory of railway station. Huge casualties could be much lower if it were not such a high population density, adverse weather conditions, and a small number of medical personnel. There is no consensus on the causes of the disaster, despite the numerous proceedings and examination, there is still no. It is believed that one of the causes of the incident is a sabotage of the plant and forcing him to save on security.

  1. "Eastern Ehab" (Sakhalin)

A little over a year ago, in the previous 2016 th - 2015, Sakhalin, or rather to its north-eastern part of the territory of the oil field "Eastern Ehab" spilled oil. Environmentalists immediately sounded the alarm and began to frighten the public environmental disaster. For more than a year the situation has improved.

Then the oil polluted stream, thereby puzzled migratory birds, occasionally stopping to rest in the amount of several thousand. Environmentalists say that among them there are all rare species that can easily become extinct as a result of the incident. Well, with the result that capacity brook resumed, though it was poured several tons.

Of course, the damage was done rather big. Consequences, even after a year, and have remained negative. Ecological disaster is, though a local scale, but it continues to struggle. It is worth noting that the "Eastern Ehab" belongs to "Rosneft".

Near the area where the oil was poured, at a distance of about 200 meters, are located houses. Local residents were among the first recorded pollution and immediately reported it to the appropriate authorities.

  1. The catastrophe of the Aral Sea

The Soviet Union for many years been carefully concealed by the constantly deteriorating state of the Aral sea-lake. This was once the world's fourth largest lake with a wide variety of underwater inhabitants, rich in fauna and flora on its shores. The diversion of water from rivers feeding the Aral sea for irrigation of agricultural plantations have led to the fact that the water is very shallow quickly. For several decades the water level in the Aral sea decreased more than 9 times, with almost a 7-fold increase in salinity. All this has led to the extinction of freshwater fish and other inhabitants of the lake. Dry bottom of the once magnificent water body has turned into lifeless desert.

In addition, pesticides and agricultural chemicals, caught in the waters of the Aral sea, deposited on the dry bottom. They are carried by the winds over a vast territory around the Aral sea, resulting in deteriorating flora and fauna and the local population suffers from various diseases. The desiccation of the Aral sea has led to irreversible consequences, both for nature and for humans. The governments of the countries of the former Soviet Union, the territory which now is a lake, do not take any measures to improve the current situation. A unique natural complex is not subject to restoration.
